This page gives an overview of the projects I have been working on at V2_Lab or in collaboration with independent artists and designers. V2_ is an interdisciplinary center for art and media technology in Rotterdam (NL). At V2_Lab, artists and developers work together to produce art projects that make use of new technologies. As project manager I was supervising these interdisciplinary teams, often becoming a personal coach for the artist. Besides managing the creative process from concept to working prototype, I assisted hands-on in the production of the prototypes and organized events to present the resulting works.
Drapery FM consists of a knitted piece of fabric that can electronically communicate the story of how it has been made to and through the surrounding radio receivers. The piece of fabric is essentially a micro FM transmitter that is, for the most part, made from copper wire and wool.
Read more at V2_Dandy Rotterdam is a documentary series about contemporary dandyism. The documentary portrays three inspiring young dandies, reflecting on the city of Rotterdam. I assisted with the production.
Visit Dandy RotterdamAs part of the CRISP 'Smart Textile Services' research, we have created a pair of knitted audio speakers. The electromagnetic coil is knitted from copper wire on a punch card knitting machine. Combined with a magnet and a flexible membrane, sound is produced.
Read more at the blogInspired by the early Fisher Price movie projector, the Bioscope allows for playback of digital content. The electronics inside replace the original film cassette. Users can upload and view their home movies frame-by-frame by turning the wheel, having the same intimate experience as the original viewer. Created during V2_'s SummerSessions 2012.
Read more at SimbitsProtei is a fleet of sailing drones, developed primarily to collect oil spills from the sea. Protei tows long oil sorbent booms and sails semi-autonomously upwind, intercepting oil sheens going downwind. The design is open source: Protei can be reproduced and modified by anyone for free. V2_ produced the first full scale working prototype.

The distance towards the garments determines their level of transparency, involving wearer and audience in a sensual play of disclosure. V2_ co-developed the hardware and software for the smart foil and coached the fashion designers in the design process.
Read more at V2_The Birds is an installation inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 horror film "The Birds". It was developed for the Re:visie program within the Dutch Film Festival. The laser cut perspex dress resembles a cage for the projected birds. I assisted in the development of the installation.
Read more at V2_Heart Beats is a wristwatch where time changes according to the wearer's heart beats. The faster your heart rate, the faster the watch will tick. Two clocks display the difference between 'regular' and 'personal' time, creating awareness about the intensity of your lifestyle. As part of V2_'s Summer Sessions, we developed the hardware of the watch.
Read more at V2_The TK 730, the knitting typewriter, is a machine that converts a piece of information, in this case words, into a knitted code that can be worn. It decodes the typed word and re-encodes it into the pattern of a knitwork.
Read more at V2_Palm Top Theater is a playful analog extension for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad that converts a 2D display into a layered 3D view. Together with the Japanese company Directions Inc, V2_ will bring the i3DG and the accompanying apps in production.
Read more at V2_Evolving Spark Network is a light and sound installation, in which sparks fly back and forth 15 feet above the audience’s heads, flashing and crackling. The installation symbolizes the human nervous system. Like the neurons in our bodies, the sparks form a complex network of connections, and the installation responds to external stimuli just as a nervous system does.

Read more at V2_Pseudomorphs is a system that lets dresses paint themselves. A Pseudomorph dress consists of two parts. A fashionable virginal white dress made of thick felt and an electronic neck piece controlling tubes filled with ink. The ink trickles down the dress finding it's way by pure chance, and so in the process creating a unique piece every time.
Read more at V2_Love Hate Punch is an interactive work of art in the form of a punching bag audience members can take a whack at. When at rest, the bag emits red light. When you hit it, light effects appear at the place of impact, flashes that goad the boxer on. If you try hard enough, you can continually change the color of the bag.
Read more at V2_Media Vintage is a series of interactive electronic textiles that contain memories. Alpha is a suitcase in which you can weave temporary secret messages in Morse code. Bravo is a tapestry that sings a song from long ago when your fingers read the embroidered Braille. Charlie is a trench-coat that reads fabric punchcards and tells you stories from an old man's life.

V2_Lab developed a series of pre-programmed modular patches that will provide artists with easy-to-use wearable technology. The Don’t Code Just Stitch series offers a range of complex technical features to those who would rather stitch then code.
Read more at V2_The Tweet Bubble Series is a series of four wearable artworks: Pocket Tweets, Loud Tweets, Paper Tweets and Classic Tweets. All four works are based on the idea that the wearer, who is also a Twitter user, shows his latest Tweet on his clothing in the form of a wearable speech bubble.
Read more at V2_Sharewear comprises of a pair of reconfigurable, electronic dresses that physically slot together to activate atmospheric pools of light. They are worn as part of a performance, inviting both wearer and audience to get close, lean on one another, morph space, manipulate light and cast long shadows.
